人類的歷史是從自身的慾望創造出來的。我的研究聚焦於三種基本的人類慾望：食物、金錢和土地。2008年，我出版了《米價》。此書指出，在十八世紀，中國的長程貿易雖有長足的發展，卻沒有出現全國性米糧市場。我另一個研究興趣是土地管理。2013年，我出版了《拆村》，並在2017年編輯了《殖民地行政與東亞土地改革》。兩本書旨在指出從西方引入的財產繼承法和利用三角測量進行的土地調查，增強了中央政府對土地的控制力，為亞洲各地帶來了社會結構的重組。我的研究還涉及貨幣歷史。於2024年，我出版了《銅錢與皇帝的錢包》。在這本書中，我指出明代戶籍制度的瓦解迫使了皇帝依賴鑄錢來增加收入，以維持北京皇宮的日常運作。這三種基本人類慾望（食物、土地和金錢）不單影響了歷史的發展，也塑造了不同時期的社會。
